Garden City Toastmasters 60th Anniversary of Toastmasters in St Catharines

ST. CATHARINES, APRIL 10, 2012 – On Friday, June 1st, 2012, Garden City Toastmasters will host its Sixtieth Anniversary Celebration, celebrating sixty years of leadership and communication training in St. Catharines. The celebration will take the form of a dinner and dance at the Coppolas Ristorante and Banquet Facility, 203 Carlton Street, St Catharines, Ontario. The keynote speaker for the evening will be Darren Lacroix, 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking.

Boasting status as one of the two oldest Toastmasters clubs in Ontario, Garden City Toastmasters was officially chartered in May 1952. It was one of only five Toastmaster clubs in Ontario at the time, with three of them folding in the following years. This left Garden City as of only two surviving clubs in Ontario. Since then, over 500 clubs have been established and spread across Ontario. Most recently chartered was Brock University Toastmasters Club and it chartered with well over the required 20 members. We also have 8 other clubs in Niagara Region.

Toastmasters is a non profit, self-help group for people who wish to increase their communication and leadership skills. In the last sixty years Garden City Toastmasters, as well as other clubs that formed later, has helped professionals, post-secondary students and other members of the community to get the butterflies in their stomachs to fly in formation when speaking in public.

The club wishes to extend an invitation to any and all members of Toastmasters, past and present, and past members of Toastmistress Clubs, to the dinner and dance. As well, any donations or loans of old Toastmaster or Toastmistress (yes – you read that correctly) material for a historical display at the celebration would be greatly appreciated.

Garden City Toastmasters Club meets each Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the St. Catharines Public Library, 54 Church Street. For more information about the event and the club, please visit http://www.gardencitytoastmasters.com or email gctoasties@gmail.com.
